Job Summary/Scope:

The Controller is expected to provide leadership and vision with respect to the firm’s strategic planning process and goals, responsible for building and growing the team to support the finance and accounting function of the firm.  Specific duties include financial forecasting, reporting and analysis, client billing and collections, budgeting and accounts payable.  The Controller supervises and manages the accounting team and is responsible for the accuracy, reliability and integrity of the firm’s general ledger, accounting practices and financial data. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for cash management of the firm including ensuring adequate cash flow to meet the firm’s current and future financial obligations, financial forecasting and interpretation of financial information, reporting to firm leadership
  • Support the firm in enhancing its performance, competitive position and profitability by identifying and addressing critical factors affecting same
  • Analyze, approve and implement all accounting procedures and automated financial information systems improvements to drive best practices
  • Analyze internal operational issues affecting the firm as a whole and determine their financial impact
  • Review and implement new systems, methodologies and controls to enhance department efficiencies, safeguarding the financial assets of the firm and the security of financial records
  • Create internal financial reporting program to best educate firm leadership on firm finances
  • Establish budget program, coordinating budgeting and reporting on expenses against budget
  • Design and implement program for client billing and receivable collection
  • Prepare statements for auditors and assist outside Accountants in tax preparation
  • Maintain vendor/banking relationships
  • Train, coach, monitor and supervise accounting staff
  • Train and educate attorneys on financial systems
  • Ensure he firm is utilizing best industry practices with respect to finance and accounting functions

Experience with law firm billing and accounting systems.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s degree; CPA a plus.

5 years of accounting/finance experience in a professional services firm (law firm desired)

3 years people management experience (direct reports) in a professional services firm (law firm desired)
